MOOSE JAW — Three schools in Holy Trinity Catholic School Division — including two in Moose Jaw — are over 100 per cent capacity, while one school is roughly half full, a new report shows.

Catholic trustees received data about school usage rates from the Ministry of Education during their recent board meeting, with the rates based on the division’s enrolment as of Sept. 30, 2024, and ministry-verified school floor plans as of Oct. 31, 2024.

The usage formula relies on enrolment and capacity — expressed as student full-time equivalent (FTE) numbers — to determine how full a school is, a board report said. The formula also includes ministry-approved pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students who are counted as 0.5 FTE and 1.0 FTE, respectively.

The data showed that, as of Sept. 30, 2024, Holy Trinity had 2,444 FTE students enrolled, while its total capacity is 2,678 FTE students based on the available floor space.

Furthermore, each school’s enrolment FTE, capacity FTE and usage rate this year is:

  • All Saints (Swift Current): 505 / 443 / 114 per cent
  • Christ the King (Shaunavon): 87 / 137 / 64 per cent
  • École St. Margaret: 197 / 305 / 64 per cent
  • Phoenix Academy: 67 / N/A / N/A
  • Sacred Heart: 287 / 267 / 107 per cent
  • St. Agnes: 321 / 271 / 119 per cent
  • St. Mary: 108 / 145 / 74 per cent
  • St. Michael: 312 / 345 / 90 per cent
  • Vanier Collegiate: 423 / 765 / 55 per cent

The report noted that the ministry has designated Christ the King as a small school of necessity for that community, while the capacity FTE and usage rate at Phoenix Academy are not reported because it is a school that delivers alternative programming only.

The next Holy Trinity board meeting is Monday, Jan. 20.
