Moose Jaw's mayoral candidates spent almost $50K during 2024 election

City hall released the expenses for the councillor and mayoral candidates during the April 7 regular city council meeting.

MOOSE JAW — spent a combined $48,424.54, according to an election expenses report presented during the April 7 regular city council meeting.

James Murdock spent $20,578.37, Clive Tolley spent $10,433.17, Crystal Froese spent $10,347.70 and Kim Robinson spent $7,055.30 during their respective quests to become — or remain — mayor of Moose Jaw.

Mike Simpkins was the only mayoral candidate not to file his campaign expenses.

James Murdock

Murdock — who was elected mayor with 5,437 votes, or roughly 63.2 per cent of all votes cast — spent $2,470.50 on advertising, $13.50 on bank charges, $922.94 on brochures, $766.98 on meetings/social functions/rallies, and $16,404.45 on signs.

Meanwhile, the campaign contributions Murdock received included $500 from Roberge Transport Partnership, $1,000 from Fifth Avenue Collection Ltd., $500 from KLM Agro Inc., $1,000 from T/A Rosior Wealth Strategies, $500 from Scott Gilroy, $300 from Derek and Laurie Freeman, $500 from Spurr Commodity Carriers Inc., $1,000 from Charles Vanden Broeke, $1,000 from Rockport Carrier Co. Inc., $1,000 from M&T Feed Lot Ltd., and $1,000 from North Star Concrete.

Furthermore, he received $500 from James and Bev Murdock, $250 from Jenna Murdock, $500 from Douglas Ferguson, $500 from Jeff Jameson, $1,000 from William Jameson, $1,000 from Robin Gilroy, $250 from Juanita Small, $200 from Wade Kot, $1,000 from W. Shea Jameson, $500 from Chris Olfert, $1,000 from Hudson Cattle Co., $1,000 from Byron Babich Farms Ltd., $1,000 from 101105637 Sask. Ltd. (Bob Dougall), $1,500 from Bob Nelson Construction (2009) Ltd., and $1,000 from Lora and David Reidy.

The numbered holding company appears to be located at 208-2208 Scarth Street in Regina, according to the provincial government’s The Saskatchewan Gazette, but data from Information Services Canada (ISC) says the company is inactive or amalgamated.

However, ; it’s unknown whether he still holds those roles.

Meanwhile, Dougall, the donor on the disclosure statement, is the president of the WHL Moose Jaw Warriors.

Other donations included $250 from Sydney Murdock, $500 from Kurt Hudson, $500 from Todd Lemieux, $500 from Allan Lemieux, $250 from William Robertson, $500 from Gayland Panko Realty Prof. Corp. $200 from Vern and Woody Lynds, $250 from a fundraising event (announcement party) and $350 from Norma Giene-Dunbar.

These donations totalled $22,800, although Murdock did not spend $2,221.63 and donated $1,110.82 to Hunger in Moose Jaw and $1,110.81 to the Moose Jaw Humane Society.

Crystal Froese

Froese — who placed second with 1,439 votes, or roughly 16.7 per cent of the votes cast — spent $5,660.70 on advertising, $4,716 on brochures, $71 on meetings/social functions/rallies and $440 on signs.

Meanwhile, the campaign contributions she received included $50 from Glenda and Gerry Julian, $50 from Jan Smith, $100 from Glen and Heather Pederson, $100 from Neil Montgomery, $100 from Roberta Fonger, $150 from Lynann and Lloyd Pethick, $200 from Arlene Wuschke, $200 from Diana and Brandon Cochrane, $900 from Kathleen Froese, $2,500 from Santokh Chhokar and $4,997.70 from Froese herself.

Clive Tolley

Tolley — who placed third with 601 votes, or roughly seven per cent of all votes cast — spent $10,443.17 on advertising.

Meanwhile, his campaign contributions included $2,000 from Robert Blatchford, $1,000 from Rod Moores, $500 from Suer and Pollon, $200 from Dennis and Shirley Devine, $1,500 from Don Howe, $300 from Ed Hobday, $450 from Anette Semple, $100 from John Petrescue, $250 from Gordon Beesley, $500 from Brad Devine, $600 from total individual contributions less than $200 each, and $3,043.17 from Tolley himself.

Kim Robinson

Robinson — who placed fifth with 494 votes or 5.7 per cent of the votes cast — spent $5,998.50 on advertising, $134.90 on meetings/social functions/rallies, $736.80 on signs and $185.10 on a website and social media.

Meanwhile, his campaign contributions included $1,000 from Sandra Dewald, $500 from Kurt Robinson and $4,000 from Warner Industries.

The next regular city council meeting is Monday, April 28.
