Traffic stop nets more than 1,500 lbs. of illicit cannabis

On Jan. 9 at approximately 11 a.m., Saskatchewan RCMP’s Roving Traffic Unit were making proactive patrols and conducted a traffic stop on Highway 1, near Swift Current.

SWIFT CURRENT - Saskatchewan RCMP's Roving Traffic Unit recently seized more than 1,500 lbs. of illicit cannabis during a traffic stop.

On Jan. 9 at approximately 11 a.m., Saskatchewan RCMP’s Roving Traffic Unit were making proactive patrols and conducted a traffic stop on Highway 1, near Swift Current.

The traffic stop involved a large cargo van.

During the subsequent investigation, officers located and seized approximately 1,551 lbs. of illicit cannabis and a sum of cash from inside the van. An adult male, who told investigators he was travelling from British Columbia to Quebec, was arrested at the scene.

Saskatchewan Highway officers with the Provincial Protective Services Branch assisted in this investigation.

A 53-year-old Port Moody, B.C., man is charged with:

  • one count, possession of property obtained by crime less than $5,000; and
  • one count, possession for the purpose of distributing.

He is scheduled to appear in Swift Current Provincial Court on April 16.
