SHAUNAVON — A tradition continues in Shaunavon as the cross-country ski trail is groomed for the season, with an extra benefit added on this year.

Alexis Hunt, Director of Wellness and Leisure in Shaunavon, stated that the trail, which is always weather dependent, typically starts in December and is groomed compliments of Ian Morstad.

Alexis mentioned that this year they are adding the newest portion, the eastside trail, making the entire community trail closer to 3.5 kilometres long.

With this addition, the whole trail itself makes a loop and heads in a variety of ways in and around the Town of Shaunavon and the Trans-Canada Trail.

According to the town's Facebook page, the trail features a compacted surface with set tracks, making it easy for both beginners and regular skiers to enjoy. Alexis notes that the "regulars" will be out as the weather improves.

Snow has not been an issue this winter, with plenty of snowfall this season, but weeks of - 20 Ctemperatures have put a chill on all outdoor activities.

As the weather warms up, however, the trail is expected to become a popular spot again for outdoor enthusiasts.

To make the trail even more accessible, Alexis says Wellness and Leisure is exploring the possibility of purchasing a pair of cross-country skis that can be borrowed from the town office. This will allow even more people to enjoy the fantastic community trail. Interested in finding out more?
