WEYBURN – The Weyburn Humane Society’s animal shelter is in a situation where puppy food is required immediately, along with adult cat food.
Shelter manager Colleen Morrice said the shelter currently has 28 dogs in care, with an increase in dogs and a slow number of adoptions occurring.
“We have seen an increase in animals and a decrease in donations, unfortunately. I try to maintain a budget, prioritizing medical, vaccines, and spay and neuters, leaving the budget a very small amount for food,” she explained.
“Puppy food is always greatly needed, as we feed our mom dogs, pups and seniors puppy food,” she added, noting this is the second time this year that she has completely run out of dog food.
“We are so very grateful to the community for always thinking of the animals here at the shelter,” said Morrice.
Since putting the word out on Facebook about running out of food, some donations came in on Friday to take care of the immediate need.
She noted that adoptions are going slowly, with some of the fostered dogs needing to be cared for six months.
Three dogs at the shelter, named Midale, Betty and Wilma, have been in the shelter for two years or more, plus one dog which was left tied up to the dumpster at the shelter gave birth to eight puppies the next day.
“We prefer not to have our dogs grow up in care, but there seems to be such an abundance all across our province currently,” said Morrice.
“I cannot emphasize enough to spay and neuter your pets. An accident litter happens in seconds,” she added.
