WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) responded to 71 calls for service during the period of April 1 to 7, resulting in a total of 21 charges. Of the charges, four were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, 16 under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), and one under the Vehicle Equipment Regulations (VER).
Officers responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of 16th Street and First Avenue during the lunch hour on April 2. Both EMS and the Weyburn Fire Department responded as well. No injuries were reported, but one of the vehicles was not drivable and required towing. One driver was issued a ticket under the TSA for failing to stop at a stop sign.
In the very early hours of Monday morning, officers responded to a report of two youths walking along Government Road carrying traffic signs. Officers located the youth and had them replace the signage in the proper spot before taking them to the WPS office. The parents of the youths involved were contacted and the matter was resolved alternatively with the youths being warned and agreeing to cover the cost of one of the signs that was damaged.
Officers attended a domestic dispute in which a family member requested to have another removed from the residence. Officers spoke to those involved and provided a ride to a family member who was leaving the residence.
On the morning of April 3, two motorists were issued significant tickets under the TSA as one was found to be using their cell phone while driving, and the other was found to be driving while their driver’s license was suspended.
City police received a report of vandalism and theft from the Hillcrest cemetery on April 6. The complainant advised that copper vases were missing from their family member’s gravesite. This matter is under investigation.
Police received a report on April 7 of a Dodge van that was stolen sometime during the night. Information was obtained from the complainant and officers on patrol were able to locate the vehicle within the city a short time later. The vehicle was seized and towed to the WPS office to be examined for evidence. This matter is also still under investigation.
The Weyburn Police also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s well-being, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
