WEYBURN - Athletes from Weyburn were part of the first week action during the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara.
Sutter Balog was on the male baseball team that won bronze.
In the baseball competition, Saskatchewan went 4-2 in the round robin, opening with a 10-0 loss to Ontario, then rattling off four straight wins – 12-3 over Nova Scotia, 13-3 over B.C., 5-4 over Ontario and 15-7 over Nova Scotia – before losing to 10-0 to B.C.
Saskatchewan lost 22-4 to Ontario in the semifinal round, but recovered to win 6-5 over B.C. in the bronze medal game.
Pitcher Jorde Chartrand was part of Saskatchewan’s female softball team that finished fourth. Team Sask went 3-1 in the round robin, winning back-to-back 7-0 decisions over Nova Scotia and P.E.I., and then losing 3-0 to Manitoba but recovering to beat B.C. 2-0.
Team Sask. won 8-0 over New Brunswick and 4-3 over Manitoba in the qualification round, but lost 5-4 to Ontario in their final game to finish in fourth.
Bethany Honig and Callie Damman both played for the box lacrosse female team, which placed eighth, overall during the competition.
In the preliminary round, Team Sask lost 5-2 to Team Manitoba, tied 5-5 with Team PE, lost 4-0 to Team Quebec and lost 5-3 to Team New Brunswick.
Then in the qualification round, Team Sask won a decisive 12-1 over Team PEI. This sent them to the quarterfinal, where they lost 11-0 to Team Ontario. In the consolation round, Team Sask lost 5-0 to Team Manitoba. Finally in the seventh-eighth place final game, Team Sask lost 5-3 to Team New Brunswick.
Saskatchewan won 10 medals after the first week of competition, with six silver and four bronze medals. Seven of the medals were in wrestling, and one medal was in para swimming.
Week two of the 2022 Canada Summer Games competition started on Tuesday.
Goalie Ty Petersen will be competing in box lacrosse with the Team Sask men’s team during the second week of competition. Golfer Darien Herlick will also be competing in men’s golf during the second week of competition.
