WEYBURN – The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Weyburn once again have a physical office in Weyburn, as they have moved into space shared with the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce and Weyburn Tourism on Third Street.
The Weyburn program coordinator, Rhiannon Leong, was joined by Amy Mohr, the former coordinator for Weyburn and the director of development and communications, and Dominika Krzeminska, the executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saskatchewan.
They held a ribbon-cutting in front of the Chamber office, along with Chamber president Stephen Schuck, Chamber manager Monica Osborn, Mayor Marcel Roy and RM of Weyburn Reeve Norm McFadden.
Krzeminska thanked the chamber and Community Futures Sunrise for allowing BBBS to share an office space with them, noting that Leong will be present in Weyburn to run the in-school mentoring program here, and she and Mohr will make the trip down from Regina as needed.
“Having the physical space allows us to have a connection with the community. We’ve had a rather good presence in the schools, and that’s growing,” added Krzeminska.
Mohr noted the in-school mentoring program, matching students from the Weyburn Comp with younger students at Legacy Park and St. Michael Schools, is going well, with 20 matches currently.
“The relationships they’re forming there are life-changing,” said Mohr, noting that Big Brothers Big Sisters is currently carrying out a survey as they have been asked by the City of Weyburn about starting an after-school program at the Credit Union Spark Centre by September 2024.
The survey is to determine if there is a need for an after-school program, and what people would like to see as part of that program. It will be open until March 16, with the hope to have the program up and running by the fall.
Leong said she will be in the office mainly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 3, other than the noon hours when she is at the schools overseeing the mentorship program. She will also be in on Mondays and Fridays, but will be in and out of the office a lot.
