The 2010 Estevan football season is coming to an end. The Sherritt Coal atom Miners finished their season a few weeks back; both the Century 21 peewee Chargers and Lafrentz Trucking Steelers played their final games this week; and the ECS Elecs close out their regular season this coming Saturday in Regina.
Despite none of the Estevan-based minor teams going deep into the playoffs, they can all look back at this season as being a success.
The Miners finished the year at 1-5, but were in every game and were able to put up a ton of points. It's pretty clear that as they get older and more experienced, the current group of nine- and 10-year-olds will become a force to be reckoned with.
The Chargers had a great season, ending the year with a record of 5-3, and even qualified for a wild card playoff game. The Chargers had an excellent all-around team, and one of the stingiest defences in the Regina Minor Football league (RMF). In fact, at one point in the season, they even went 11 straight quarters without allowing a single point.
It was an up and down season for the Steelers, as they came within one game of making the playoffs. The Black and Gold improved every game all season, and finished with a 3-5 record. The Steelers had a few players on their roster that will no doubt be standouts with the Elecs in the coming years.
Speaking of those Elecs, they too have improved vastly over the course of the season. Though they haven't managed to win any games as of yet, there have been several occasions where they were a play or two away from coming out victorious. Throughout their season, ECS has never looked like they didn't belong, even against the best teams in the Moose Jaw High School Athletic Association Football League (MJHSAAFL).
The Elecs have one more chance to capture their first win when they play Central Collegiate this Saturday, and it would be a fitting end to the year for them to get that first win in their final game.
Every team in the MJHSAAFL qualifies for the playoffs, so it's possible the Elecs could have their coming out party in the post-season. After all, anything can happen in the playoffs.
What makes all of these Estevan football teams' stories even more compelling is the fact the RMF teams have only been in existence for three seasons, and the Elecs, just two seasons.
With the support and dedication the Energy City has for these football programs, it is a certainty that within a few years' time, success will be had by all four; namely the Miners, Chargers, Steelers and Elecs.
