The winners of the 2016 YouthBiz entrepreneurship competition were announced by Community Futures Sunrise.
There were 240 students in southeast Saskatchewan who competed by coming up with business ideas, and writing what it would be like to be an entrepreneur.
For the entries, the students demonstrated creative ideas, and worked hard to develop income sheets, marketing materials and business plans for their imagined business ventures.
There were winners declared in the Grades 6-8 category and Grades 9-12 category, along with achievement awards. The prize money awarded was $500 for first place, $300 for second place and $150 for third place.
In the Grades 6-8 category, first place went to Skyler Kreger of St. Michael School, for her venture, 鈥淩ock and Rollin鈥� Rink鈥�.
Her venture idea is set establish an indoor roller-skating and skateboard rink, taking inspiration from the roller rinks of the 1980s.
In second was Andrew Altwasser of Yellow Grass School for 鈥淗at Trick Hockey鈥�, an off-ice hockey training centre, and in third was Denae King of the Weyburn Comp for 鈥淜omfy Kings Clothing鈥�, a clothing line for men, women and children offering clothing suitable for sports or for everyday use.
In the Grades 9-12 category, first place went to Paris Lyon, Jessica Christopherson and Jordyn Byrns of Yellow Grass School, for their venture, 鈥淭riple J鈥檚 Gourmet Meals To Go鈥�, which would provide homemade meals available for takeout or delivery, which could be bought individually or on a subscription basis for one, three or six months or for a year.
In second was Megan Guest of Yellow Grass School for 鈥淭ack in the Box鈥�, a pet food and supplies store with animal health products and saddles.
In third place was Megan Ebel of St. Michael School for 鈥�3, 2, 1 Capture It Photography.鈥� She was offering to do photography of weddings, team photos, birthdays or family events.
In addition, Rilyn Murray of Yellow Grass School won an achievement award for 鈥淕oing the Extra Mile鈥� for his venture, 鈥淔resh Fondant Cakes鈥�.
