An unknown amount of sludge was leaked into Regina's wastewater system from the Co-op Refinery Complex (CRC).

The issue was detected on May 22 when analysis showed irregularities, said Brad DeLorey, the director of communication and public affairs for the CRC. The situation was immediately isolated.

Early investigation is that strong and sustained winds leading up to the date of the incident resulted in stirring up sediments in the pond, resulting in a discharge of sludge into the sewage system.

The city has indicated that everything is back to normal.

There was no threat to the natural environment or the public.

The investigation is ongoing and DeLorey said measures will be taken to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
