Saskatchewan producers now have 81 per cent of the 2017 crop in the ground, Saskatchewan Agriculture reported in its crop report for the week of May 23.
But cool and wet weather was delaying seeding and herbicide applications for many producers. This average for the province is right in line with the five-year (2012-2016) seeding average for this time of year of 82 per cent, and the ten-year average was 81 per cent. One year ago, producers had seeded 94 per cent of the 2016 crop and the year 2015 also saw early seeding progress with 97 per cent completed. In 2014 seeding was slower with only 78 per cent completed by the start of June, and in 2012 seeding progress was similar with 74 per cent completed. Seeding progress was the most behind in 2012 with 67 per cent completed.
