It was another one of those wild and wooly games against the Estevan Bruins Sunday night, where some players serve more time in the penalty box than they do on the ice.
First came Weyburn's short-handed goal with barely one minute off the score clock in the opening period.
Lucas Ulmer opened the scoring with a short-handed goal at 1:12, unassisted. The celebration was short-lived however as Troy Hunter of the Bruins evened the contest at the 2:07 mark.
Estevan would grab the lead back when Cole Olson scored at the 4:47 mark and the visiting team would keep the 2-1 lead for the remainder of the first period.
Weyburn would spring back to life early in the second period when Dylan Coupal would knot the game up at two all, with assists going to Jens Johnson and Kyle Vogal.
The Wings would increase their lead to 3-2 when Bruce Keegan along with Tanner McCall and Rodney Cowie found the back of the Bruins net. Weyburn would carry the lead into the third period until Estevan's Joel Kot would even the score (3-3) at the 4:14 mark.
Weyburn would once again grab a slim lead (4-3) on the power play at the 10:39 mark of the third period when Brock Appleyard along with Ulmer and Jesse Ross delighted the hometown crowd at Crescent Point Place Arena.
Estevan did not share the same feelings though and Cole Gibson scored the tying goal at the 15:06 mark of the third period.
It would take a shoot-out to declare the winner and the Wings' Brock Appleyard would score the only goal of the shootout to give the Wings the lift and victory needed.
Weyburn was one for five on power plays while the Bruins were only one for four on scoring chances.
Wings clip Hawks 4-1
According to the old song, "Friday nights all right for fighting and to get a little action in." And that's what the Wings did as they manhandled the Nipawin Hawks with a 4-1 victory in front of a hometown crowd at the Crescent Point Place Arena.
Both teams remained scoreless in the opening period but the Wings would spring to life in the second period with Drew George opening the scoring at the 8:34 mark of the period with Clinton Pirio and Tanner McCall garnering assists.
The Hawk's Jeff Datoff would score the only Nipawin goal on Wings' netminder Riley Hengen at the 11:12 mark of the second period on a powerplay.
Weyburn would strike twice more in the second period with Keegan being the next Wing to score with help from Rodney Cowie and Appleyard.
Cowie would make it a 3-1 contest on a power play drive at the 18:53 mark of the third period.
Weyburn would score the only goal of the third period to make it a 4-1 score at the 18:11 mark on another power play drive with assists going to Coltyn Sanderson and Ross.
Weyburn now embarks on a three game road trip against Nipawin, Melfort and LaRonge. The Wings will come back home to play Melville on December 17 and Yorkton on Saturday, December 18th. These will be the last games before the Christmas break.
