White Bear Education Complex held the Treaty 4 Badminton Championships on Friday, April 8. The junior tournament included 80 badminton players from the Treaty 4 area. Students from grades seven to nine played in five categories including: boys singles, boys doubles, girls singles, girls double and mixed doubles.
White Bear Education Complex hosted eight of the possible 18 schools from within the Treaty 4 area. This included schools as far north as Piapot First Nation and Keeseekoose. In order to make it to the championships, players have to first make their way through divisionals.
White Bear Education Complex started practicing in March with Sheri Cappo as the team coach. The students all played very well, with two medal places won by the school. Nakota Ackachuck took the silver in boys singles, with Evan Shepherd and Daylon Lonechild taking the silver in boys doubles.
The Treaty 4 Banner is given to the school with the highest number of points. This year, the banner was presented to Ochapowace with 41 points. Runner ups included Keeseekoose with 31 points and Kahkawistahaw with 26 points.
Overall, the tournament was a success. Coach Sheri Cappo said that "the event was very well organized." She continued with "I would like to thank all coaches and athletes for their participation in this event. We enjoyed hosting this tournament and hope to host more in the future."
