Weyburn Red Wings split weekend games with Melville

The Red Wings won 7-5 at home, but lost 6-1 on Friday in Melville.

WEYBURN – The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings split their back-to-back games against the Melville Millionaires over the weekend.

They lost in Melville 6-1 on Friday night, then won 7-5 at home on Saturday night at Crescent Point Place.

In the win on Saturday, the Wings jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period.

Jakob Kalin opened the scoring with assists to Ty Mason and Simon Pollock, then 40 seconds later Ethan Whillans had a quick break-away and scored, assisted by Braigh LeGrandeur.

Sam Boldt got his first goal as a Red Wing, with assists to Blake Norris and Whillans.

Melville got on the board with two goals in the second within two minutes of each other, then Pollock scored unassisted.

Melville then scored three goals before the period’s end to take a 5-4 lead heading into the third period.

The Red Wings had three goals in the last frame, with Pollock getting his second goal of the night from Whillans, and Lucas Jeffreys got his first goal of the season with assists to Mason and Whillans.

Kalin wrapped up the scoring into the empty net with 28 seconds left in the game to secure the win.

Dazza Mitchell was in net for the full game, saving 29 of the 34 shots that came his way.

In Friday’s game, the Red Wings’ lone goal was by Mi-Kwan Tallman at 16:39 of the first period, unassisted.

Melville scored a flurry of five goals in the second period, and one more, late in the third by former Red Wing Cooper Chisholm.

Mitchell was in net until he was pulled in the second period, then Eric Kahl was in until he was pulled for the extra attacker a couple of times. Mitchell saved 19 of 23 shots, and Kahl saved 11 of 13 shots, and was named the Red Wings game star.

The Red Wings will be on the road on Wednesday for a game against the Melfort Mustangs, then for two games in Nipawin on Friday and Saturday.
