WEYBURN – The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings earned five of a possible six points this past week, with two wins and a shootout loss, all at home.
On Wednesday, they beat the La Ronge Ice Wolves 5-3, and on Friday, they had a shootout loss to the Melfort Mustangs by the score of 4-3.
On Family Day Monday, they played an afternoon game and trounced the Melville Millionaires 5-0.
In the game with the Ice Wolves, Weyburn led 3-1 after the first period, with goals by Braigh LeGrandeur, Blake Betson and Cade Meiklejohn.
After no scoring in the second period, Tyler Teasdale scored on the power play in the third, and after La Ronge scored twice, Carter Briltz cinched the win for Weyburn with an empty netter with 25 seconds left on the clock.
Dazza Mitchell played for two periods, making 23 saves on 24 shots, then Angelo Zol played for a period, making six saves on eight shots.
In the game with Melfort, the Red Wings scored first, with Matthew Hodson scoring on the power play with 32 seconds left in the first period.
The Mustangs then scored three times in the second period, and Hodson scored his second goal. In the third period, Jacob Visentini scored to tie the game, and it remained knotted at 3-3 through the overtime period.
Each team had three shooters out to take a shot, and only one Mustangs player managed to score to given them the win.
Zol was in net for the full game and overtime period, making 37 saves on 40 shots.
On Monday afternoon, Mitchell earned the shutout, stopping all 36 shots on net.
The goals all came in the first two periods, by Betson, Jaxson Ruthven and Jerome Maharaj in the first period, and Dallen Oxelgren and Briltz in the second.
The Red Wings will host the Nipawin Hawks on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m., then they will travel to Nipawin to play on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
