Weyburn Red Wings drop two games, hold successful fundraiser shootout

The Wings held a Calcutta shootout as a fundraiser for the Red Wings Education Fund

WEYBURN – The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings lost a pair of home games over the weekend, losing to Notre Dame 8-3 on Friday and then to Flin Flon Bombers 6-0 on Saturday night.

Following the game against Flin Flon, the Red Wings held a successful fundraiser Calcutta shootout event, raising money for the Red Wings Education Fund.

Half of the money raised went to the fund to help players who pursue post-secondary education after their junior hockey career, and the other half was split between the top three winners.

The top winners were goaltender Jackson Fellner in first place, Matthew Reidy in second and Ethan Clements in third.

In the game just before the shootout, the Red Wings ran into penalty trouble, with four of the six goals scored on the powerplay, including the first two goals while down two men.

Fellner was in net until after the fourth goal was scored in the second period, making 16 saves on 20 shots. Dazza Mitchell was in net for the balance of the game, and made 16 saves on 18 shots.

In the game against the Hounds, Weyburn’s Davis Chorney got the Red Wings on the scoreboard first, with an assist from Austyn Hansen.

Kirk Mullen of the Red Wings scored in the second to give the Wings a 2-0 lead, assisted by Mitch Wilkie and Mik-wan Tallman.

The Hounds then score four unanswered goals that period, and added four more in the third period before the Red Wings scored one more, Ty Mason from Simon Pollock and Ethan Whillans.

Weyburn will host the Melville Millionaires on Tuesday night at Crescent Point Place at 7:30 p.m., then will travel for the return game in Melville on Friday, Feb. 11. The Red Wings will then host the Kindersley Klippers on Saturday, Feb. 12.
