WEYBURN –The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings were doubled by the visiting Flin Flon Bombers on Friday night, dropping the home game 6-3 in front of 573 fans.
Meanwhile, the Red Wings premiered their new black jerseys for the home game, and the Weyburn Fire Department had volunteers on hand to sell chuck-a-pucks in the lobby.
The game was much closer than the final score indicated, with the Bombers striking first with 48 seconds to go in the first period, and then again three and a half minutes into the second.
Weyburn’s Ty Mason scored to bring them within one, assisted by Eduard Wruck and Lucas Jeffreys, but then Flin Flon scored twice in less than a minute.
The Red Wings’ Matteo Speranza scored unassisted at 17:45, and three minutes into the third, Jakob Kalin brought the Wings back to within one goal of the Bombers. He was assisted by Braigh LeGrandeur and Elijah Anderson.
Flin Flon scored late in the third, and after Red Wings goalie Dazza Mitchell was pulled the Bombers added an empty-netter to clinch the win.
Mitchell was in for the whole game, except for a minute and 20 seconds in the third, and saved 29 of 34 shots that came his way.
On the powerplay, Weyburn was one for five, while Flin Flon didn’t score on any of their powerplay opportunities.
The Red Wings’ next game will be in Kindersley against the Klippers on Oct. 18, and against Melville on Oct. 21 in their arena before hosting the Millionaires back at Crescent Point Place on Oct. 22.
