WEYBURN – Weyburn lacrosse goalie Ty Petersen is with the Canadian Lacrosse League’s Canadian Development Team in Melbourne, Australia, to compete for the International Indoor Junior Lacrosse (IIJL) Commonwealth Cup on March 15-18.
The IIJL Commonwealth Cup was originally going to be held in March of 2020, but it was cancelled by the COVID pandemic.
It will be hosted by the Altona Lacrosse Club in a newly-built lacrosse field in Melbourne.
Petersen plays with the Saskatchewan SWAT team out of Saskatoon, the only Junior A lacrosse team in the province, and hopes in a couple of years he can be drafted by a pro team, such as Saskatchewan Rush.
Australian Box Lacrosse and the Canadian Lacrosse League will compete for the 2023 IIJL Commonwealth Cup.
Prior to facing-off for the winner-take-all final, Canada will take part in a four-team round-robin against city/state teams from Adelaide, Melbourne, and Perth.
Players from the Australian city/state teams will then be selected to play for Australia in the 2023 IIJl Commonwealth Cup Final.
Earlier this year, Petersen was part of the Mustangs team from Saskatchewan who won a silver medal at the U.S. Winter Nationals, held on Feb. 3-5 in Phoenix, Ariz.
He and two other Canadians were selected to the all-star team for the tournament.
Petersen flies out of Regina on Saturday for Vancouver, where he will meet up with the other Canadian team members before they fly to Australia for the competition.
