WEYBURN – Both the Weyburn Comp Eagles senior teams were away at basketball tournaments on the weekend, placing well in their respective competitions before taking on the Estevan Elecs this week for the McLeod Series.
The Weyburn Comp Eagles Senior Girls basketball team traveled to Humboldt to play in a tournament on Feb. 9.
They played Martensville on Friday and played strong from the start of the game. They maintained their drive and push and came away with a victory, defeating Martensville 57-33.
On Saturday, they faced Tisdale. The Weyburn girls were a powerful force and steamrolled the Tisdale Tornadoes, shutting them down to only one basket in each of the third and fourth periods, finishing the game 58-18.
They went on to the gold medal final at 7 p.m. and faced the Humboldt Mohawks. The game stayed tight and both teams stopped numerous shots but eventually the Eagles pulled ahead and came away with the victory, the final score being 38-31.
This year's Eagles team has six Grade 12 girls finishing up their high school basketball season in March.
The WCS Eagles senior boys basketball team traveled to Yorkton this past weekend to play in the annual Water Tower Classic, hosted by Yorkton Regional and Yorkton Sacred Heart schools.
On Friday the boys took on Tisdale to open the event. The Eagles started strong and never looked back, winning by a score of 94-64.
Their second game Saturday saw a rematch from last weekend against the A.E. Peacock Tornadoes. Like last weekend, a tight match with several lead changes ensued with the Tornadoes taking a seven-point lead into the final minute.
The Eagles pushed back but just couldn’t recreate the events from last weekend, falling 90-84 in the end. This put the Eagles into the third-place game against the Balgonie Griffins. With the Griffins a bit short-handed, the Eagles jumped out to an 11-0 run before the opponents could get on the board. A solid team effort by the bench as the Eagles cruised to a 74-52 win.
Next up for these young men is the McLeod series, which will determine not only the 2024 champion, but also the No. 1 team in the south moving into the last month of the season.
The Weyburn half of the historic McLeod Series, between the Weyburn Comp Eagles and Estevan Elecs senior boys and girls teams will be on Thursday, Feb. 15. The Estevan half of the games was on Tuesday night. The senior girls will play at 5:30 p.m., and the senior boys will follow.
No artificial noise makers will be allowed.
Gate charges will be the same as for the Co-op Challenge, as all Adults and high school students are $5 each, or $2 with a non-perishable food item for the food bank.
Parents with a WCS season ticket get in at no cost, and elementary students and younger get in for free.
