WEYBURN – Friday Night lights arrived on the 23rd with an Estevan versus Weyburn match-up under the lights on WMF field. In front of full stands and goal line to goal line seated fans, the game got busy real fast. The Eagles turned in a strong performance to win 46-6.
On the Eagles first possession, Owen Istace scored the first touchdown of the game on a six-yard run. After the defense held and forced Estevan to punt, Kaleb Berg took it to the house on the return and the Eagles went up 14-0.
Not to be outdone, three plays later Spencer Bell returned another punt for a touchdown giving the Eagles a three-score lead.
After Estevan was forced to give up a safety making the game 23-0, a quick drive put together by QB Conner Kerr finished with a 29-yard pass to Isaiah Sanderson for the fourth touchdown of the half.
Estevan wasn’t going to go quietly, as they pulled off an impressive second quarter drive to score their first touchdown before the half.
In the second half, Grade 10 QB Nolan Uhren was in control while the WCS Eagles rotated through personnel and saw most of their bench see some playing time in front of their home town fans.
Carter Houghton ended up kicking three field goals in the game, and late in the second half Spencer Bell scored his second TD of the game, this time on the ground carrying it in from 15 yards out.
The Eagles finished with 168 yards passing and 112 yards rushing in the win. A great energetic crowd finally got to see their team as this was the first home game of the season for the Eagles.
Next game for the football squad is this Saturday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. against the Swift Current Colts at Darold Kot Field.
