WEYBURN – The 3-0 Eagles took on the 1-2 Moose Jaw Peacock Tornadoes on Saturday on Darold Kot Field, and came away with the 35-7 win.
The Eagles came out flying, scoring on their first three drives with a Conner Kerr 32-yard run, an Owen Istace five-yard run and a punt blocked by the Eagles defense and recovered in the end zone by Spencer Bell.
Moving into the second quarter the Eagles stumbled a bit with a few mistakes that slowed down the progress, but Kerr connected with Nolan Uhren for a 47-yard catch and run to put the Eagles up 28-0 at halftime.
The Eagles defense held strong as they have through the season thus far, limiting the Peacock offense to only two first downs in the opening quarter. The Tornadoes had a bit more success in the second quarter with five first downs, but the Eagles defense did not allow them to cross half and kept them off the scoreboard in the first half.
Coming out of the locker room refreshed and ready to roll again, the Eagles started the half strong and scored an early touchdown as Conner Kerr and Isaiah Sanderson connected on a 42-yard catch and run to push the Eagles out in front 35-0.
The second half for the Tornadoes was a better one and the senior Eagles had a chance to get some playing time for all their players in front of their home town friends and families.
Some learning situations and chances to step up was what the coaches wanted to see and over a tough second half the Eagles defense was scored on in the late third quarter for only the second time this season.
A quiet fourth quarter for both squads saw the scoreboard remain unchanged, and the Eagles came away with the 35-7 victory moving them into sole possession of first place with a 4-0 record.
The Eagles, and the league, now have a bye week around Thanksgiving, and will prepare to host the Yorkton Raiders on Saturday, October 14 at 1 p.m.
This week the Eagles will have their final Junior Varsity game on Wednesday. The JV squad will be heading to Regina to play the Lumsden Devils in a nine-man football game at Mosaic Stadium at 7 p.m.
