It was a good weekend of racing for Tyson Turnbull at the Estevan Motor Speedway. The Season Championships were held at EMS on Saturday, and Turnbull won his heat, his feature race, and the modifieds trophy dash.

Coming into the final races of the season, Turnbull led Joren Boyce by three points in the standings, and he cemented his place at the top by winning his first race of the season.

"It's pretty cool. The race win almost means more to me than the championship because I've been trying so hard for a couple years just to win races," said Turnbull. "But it's definitely cool, I mean me, my dad and my brother all have championships now."

Though the win on Saturday was his first of the year, it was consistency that won Turnbull the points championship.

"I ran second to my brother a couple times and third place behind (Travis) Hagen and (John) Flory, the one time. It seemed like I was up there all season, just a tick off my brother's speed and I had a hard time beating him, but I finally got it done so I thought that justified winning the championship," boasted Turnbull.

Turnbull admits he and his brother Aaron have a rivalry going. He went as far as to say his brother has the faster car, and that he lucked out on the championship, since Aaron had an unfortunate situation off the track that cost him the lead in points.

"It's a friendly rivalry. We've never wrecked each other or anything but we race each other harder than anybody, and it's not just because he's my brother, he just the toughest guy around here to beat," said Turnbull, who admits he feels a little extra motivation when he finds himself beside his brother on the track.

Turnbull is dedicating the win and the season championship to his friend, Tyler Fedyk, who was killed in an ATV accident on Sunday, September 5. Fedyk was an integral part of the Estevan racing community. A moment of silence was held in his memory before the races got started on Saturday.

"He was a good buddy of mine and his family was there that night, so it was pretty special to get the win and the championship for him," said Turnbull.

Jim Harris ended up finishing second in the modifieds point standings, while Boyce was third.

Dana Brandt, who won the hobby stocks feature on Saturday, also won the trophy dash in that class. Dallas Rice finished second and Gary Goudy winded up third.

In the stock car class, Rocky Alexander won both the final race of the year and the point championship. Joe Flory and Greg Mann were second and third, respectively.
