The Estevan Tower Wolves certainly didn't forget how to hit the ball over the winter.

The Wolves hit for contact and power last week in picking up victories of 13-4 over the Oxbow Chiefs and 10-2 over the Wawota Pats.

The Wawota win came Thursday in the team's home opener at Lynn Prime Park, which was called after five innings due to poor weather.

The Pats got on the board first with two runs in the first inning, coming on a walk and an infield single, but it was all Wolves after that.

"They had slower velocity pitchers, so it took a couple of innings to get used to that, but once we got on we were hitting the ball on the nose for the most part," said Wolves coach Devin Aspinall.

Estevan tied it in the bottom of the first when a run scored off an error on a Riley Panteluk single.

Jordan Fieber hit an RBI single in the second to put the Tower Wolves ahead, but they also left the bases loaded.

The home side scored two more in the third inning off back-to-back doubles, and from there the rout was on.

"The wind was playing a little bit of a role too, so that caused a few errors on their part," said Aspinall."

Newcomer Evan Marsh got the start for Estevan, with Justin Kendall coming on in relief.

Aspinall said he was impressed with both, especially Kendall, who hadn't thrown in two years.

"It was good to see (that) he came in and threw really well. He struck out the side in the first inning he came in," he said of Kendall.

The Wolves were also solid in the field, despite rain and heavy winds. Aspinall added that the players haven't been able to work on their fielding much this spring.

Estevan had to show some patience at the plate against Oxbow on Tuesday, with lots of walks being dished out by the Chiefs.

The Wolves got five different pitchers into that game.

Aspinall said the team's new players made valuable contributions in the first week of the season.

"We lost a couple of veterans and I wasn't sure, and the new guys came in and we'd never seen them play before, but I'm very happy so far. I think we're going to be a very strong team."

The Tower Wolves were scheduled to visit the Kenosee Cubs last night. Their next home game is June 14 against the Carnduff Astros.
