After coming close last week, the Estevan Lafrentz Trucking Steelers got their first win of the season on Saturday. The Steelers used a balanced attack and capitalized on six second half turnovers to crush the Notre Dame Hounds 38-0.
The Steelers came out guns-a-blazin' scoring on their first play from the line of scrimmage. Quarterback Kolby Fleury hit Evan Tarnes with a short pass and Tarnes flew down the field and into the end zone, giving Estevan a 7-0 lead.
Thanks to some stingy defence, the Steelers were able to carry that lead into the second half where they completely took over the game.
Fullback Nolan Tide was the recipient of a touchdown pass from Fleury with three minutes remaining in the third quarter, and after a successful two point conversion attempt, the Steelers were up 16-0.
It was more of the same from the Estevan defence in the second half, as they recovered three fumbles and added three interceptions.
Head coach Murray Fischer said it's impossible to pick just one player on defence who made the difference.
"The defence was hungry and they knew exactly what they needed to do. There were basically three guys that we had to key in on," said Fischer. "Our linebackers had a fantastic game and our corners were on the ball."
Thanks to an Isaac Elder interception - in which he returned the ball for a touchdown - and another two point conversion, Estevan took a 24-0 lead into the fourth quarter.
From there, they breezed to victory adding two more touchdowns for the 38-0 win. After the game Fischer said his team won because they came prepared.
"We knew what we had to do. Last week we played a physical game and the guys played at that same level today; we've just gotten hungrier and hungrier," he said. "Games like these carry over. We have momentum now and we know what it takes to win, and from here on in, I think the players will expect a better game from themselves."
The Steelers will try for their second win in a row this Saturday when they welcome the Regina Ravens to Woodlawn Regional Park. Kick-off is at 1 o'clock.
