REGINA — Last week Connor Bedard became the fifth player in Western Hockey League history to score 100 career goals before he turned 18.
The 17-year-old Regina Pats player enters the week with league-bests of 39 goals, 42 assists, and 81 points in 33 games this season. The Pats split their two games last week. They are 5-5-0-0 in their last 10 contests. The squad has a 22-20-1-1 record for the season.
The Pats fell 4-2 in Swift Current on Friday as the host Broncos scored three times in the third period. The loss halted a three-game winning streak for the Pats.
Regina got on the board first with Bedard scoring in the first period on the power play. In the second, Josh Davies tied things up with a power play goal of his own. Parker Berge’s second of the season put the Pats back out on front, 2-1, 2:32 into the third. The Broncos then scored three straight: Josh Filmon, Drew Englot, and Davies, on a power play.
For Regina, goalie Drew Sim made 26 saves on 30 shots. Reid Dyck stopped 25 shots.
Sporting SpongeBob SquarePants jerseys on Nickelodeon Night for Children’s Miracle Network, the Pats swam past the Broncos, 5-2, at home Saturday. At the intermissions, Regina was on top 2-1 and 3-1. A highlight of the night was Pats forward Matteo Michels scoring his first WHL goal to cap the scoring in the third period.
Bedard is on a 32-game points streak. He lit the lamp twice. Scoring for Regina in addition to Bedard and Michels were Tanner Howe (23 on the season) and Alexander Suzdalev (24). Stanislav Svozil recorded three assists. He has 41 assists this season – second to only Bedard. Sim made 23 saves.
Reid Dyck had 25 stops for Swift Current. Scoring for the Broncos were Connor Gabriel and Clarke Caswell.
The Pats are off until Jan. 29 when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers
