Rebels win Notekeu championship

The Assiniboia Senior Rebels won the Notekeu League Championship in a nail-biter game six on March 18 in Assiniboia. The Rebels overcame the Mossbank Blades after two sudden death overtime periods in a tight 6-5 win in the series final on home ice.

The Assiniboia Senior Rebels won the Notekeu League Championship in a nail-biter game six on March 18 in Assiniboia. The Rebels overcame the Mossbank Blades after two sudden death overtime periods in a tight 6-5 win in the series final on home ice.
The euphoric fans stood to cheer the Rebels who held the championship cup last year. Derek Lessmeister and Sean Whelan — who both scored crucial goals for the Rebels in the final game — were co-winners of the playoff MVP award. The pair ranked one and two in the playoff scoring charts as well as in the top ten in regular season play. Fans for the second ranked Mossbank team returned home proud of the Blades.
The team played hard-fought clean games and offered superb competition. Gracious to the end, as a final gesture of good sportsmanship the visiting team gave an on-ice salute to the Rebels in victory.The Senior Rebels were crowned the 2016-17 league champions. Assiniboia topped the Notekeu League standings for the 2016-17 season with 16 wins in 18 games, scoring 102 goals along the way. Mossbank was ranked number two with 14 wins and 90 goals.
