ASSINIBOIA - Powerlifter Maura Belles recently won a gold medal at the Western Canadian Finals in 2021.
That win advanced Maura off to Canadian nationals in Vancouver.
A win at that level will see her competing in World Championship.
Assiniboia born and raised, Maura Belles is a graduate of Assiniboia Composite high school in 2020. Now living in Calgary, and attending University there, Maura has competed in power lifting and weight lifting.
Belles first discovered her passion for powerlifting when she competed at her first meet “Last Chance” in Moose Jaw in Dec. 2021.
While out in Calgary for university she won overall lifter at a local meet called “Grand Lift Open” in Calgary to qualify for provincials where Maura won gold and captured the title of overall junior lifter of the event. At Western Canadian Finals she won gold to qualify her for her upcoming competition, the nationals held by the Canadian Powerlifting Union.
Her success in powerlifting has been swift and almost overwhelming as she has only been competing for little over a year. Being a avid competitor as a multi sport athlete in the community of Assiniboia gave her strength and her competitive edge. Due to her team sports being put on pause in 2020 because of COVID restrictions Maura was led to find an individual sport in powerlifting that has kept her challenged and led to an exiting future in the sport.
The Canadian Powerlifting Union Nationals will take place Feb. 13 to 18 in Vancouver B.C. Maura will compete Wednesday, Feb.15 at 3 P.M. (CST). A live stream link and updates will be posted to @maurabelles accounts for instragram and Facebook.
