Poor fielding hurts Tornados in Melville

The Estevan TS&M Tornados suffered the same fate in back-to-back games in Melville on Sunday.

The Tornados lost both games of the doubleheader by identical 16-6 scores to fall to 1-5 in Baseball Regina peewee AAA action.

Head coach Kent Phillips said the team's pitching and hitting were adequate, but bad defence was their downfall.

"Our fielding was terrible. We gave up a lot of runs on errors. We have a practice tonight and we're working on that," Phillips chuckled Tuesday morning.

He said the infield was solid, but the outfield had a lot of trouble.

Phillips said part of the problem is not having practiced as much as some of the northern teams, with the weather keeping local teams off the diamonds this spring.

The Tornados got some good work from their hurlers, although their endurance was lacking, something Phillips hopes will change with improved arm strength over the course of the season.
"We were hitting the strike zone a lot," he said.

The highlight of the day was Mac Fichter hitting a home run over the fence. Tyler Phillips hit two doubles and Dawson Noviss turned in some base hits from the two-hole as well as some excellent plays at second base.

The Tornados have also added two players. One has recovered from a case of mono that has kept him off the field, and the other is a new recruit from Lampman. The team now has 11 players.
Estevan's next game is next Wednesday in Carlyle.
