Peewee AA Bruins outscore Weyburn in opener

The Prairie Mines & Royalty Bruins used a five-goal second period to top the Weyburn Youngfellows 8-6 in their season opener Saturday in Weyburn.

The Prairie Mines & Royalty Bruins used a five-goal second period to top the Weyburn Youngfellows 8-6 in their season opener Saturday in Weyburn.

Cole Fonstad led the attack for the peewee AA club with a hat trick, all three goals coming in the middle frame.

Hunter Piche (2), Josh Skjonsby, Jayden Davis and Colton Schell also scored for the Bruins, while Fonstad and Brayden Pachal each added a pair of assists.

Head coach Derek Wilhelm said it was a penalty-filled affair and that the Bruins' power play rescued the victory.

"We dominated the special teams play. They outplayed us 5-on-5, I thought, but our power play was on fire and our penalty kill was awesome," he said.

Estevan led 3-2 after the first period.

"They scored three quick ones to get back into the game and then our power play gave us the cushion again," Wilhelm said.

"It was a tight game the whole time."

Zach Miller earned the win in the Bruins' crease.

Wilhelm said he was happy to get offensive contributions from a few sources.

"It's always nice when all three lines end up scoring for you. Weyburn had the one line that they were depending on, where we've got three that have been able to put the puck in the net."

That being said, defensive zone coverage during 5-on-5 play has been identified as an area that needs work.

"We struggled a bit with that," Wilhelm said.
