Onrait, O'Toole to try their hand at Speedway

There will be many extraordinary moments when SportsCentre touches down in Estevan on Aug. 25. One of the most entertaining, surely, will be anchors Jay Onrait and Dan O'Toole duking it out behind the wheel of stock cars at Estevan Motor Speedway.

Downtown Estevan will again be packed with people on Aug. 25, with an afternoon packed with activities built around the SportsCentre broadcast.

There will be many extraordinary moments when SportsCentre touches down in Estevan on Aug. 25.

One of the most entertaining, surely, will be anchors Jay Onrait and Dan O'Toole duking it out behind the wheel of stock cars at Estevan Motor Speedway.

It's not clear what time the race will take place, but it will be a highlight.

Kraft Celebration Tour committee chair Wanda Harron said the rest of the duo's activities haven't been decided yet, and the committee is taking suggestions.

"Anything that puts Estevan activities in the spotlight, let's show this nation what we're all about: our community spirit, our volunteerism."

She said the Speedway race was set up when TSN producer Tim Moriarty - yes, the infamous Producer Tim - asked for a contact at the track.

Harron said most of the planning has been completed seamlessly, but volunteers are still being accepted for the day of the event, mainly running booths.

"Many hands make light work for everyone, and honestly, the jobs aren't that hard," Harron said.
Residents are encouraged to bring signs to the broadcast.

"The more people that are around during the live broadcast and get on camera, I think it will make Estevan look more impressive across the nation."

SportsCentre won't be the only broadcast taking place downtown that afternoon. Riders play-by-play man Rod Pedersen will host his afternoon show, the Sports Cage, from Estevan.

Several players from the Riders and Regina Rams will also be in attendance.

"You can't buy this kind of publicity," Harron said.

Despite the football theme, people from all walks of life and from all over southeast Saskatchewan are encouraged to hit the street.

"Like we've said time and time again, it's a celebration for our football, but (also) for all of Estevan.

"It's great to be able to feature some of the things that don't get into the spotlight as much and then you can attract a more diverse crowd," Harron explained.

In order to transport the TSN stage, which weighs roughly 80,000 pounds, to 4th St., several blocks will be closed off beginning Aug. 24.

The closures include 4th St. from Souris Ave. to 13th Ave., and two blocks of 11th Ave.
