The Wood Mountain Regional Park rodeo grounds were packed with competitors and rodeo fans attending the historic Wood Mountain Sports and Stampede from July 7-9. The event is the oldest continuous rodeo in Canada since 1890. Rafter Anchor Rodeo supplied the stock and the play-by-play was announced by Robert Schmidt.
As a Canadian Cowboy’s Association sanctioned event, the weekend action included CCA Slack and rodeo competition as well as the Little Britches Rodeo for tomorrow’s rodeo stars and the popular Ranch Rodeo. Entertainment events attached to the rodeo were the sponsors’ appreciation dinner and two nights of cabarets featuring the group Navajo.
The three days of rodeo offered a full schedule of highly competitive action. In several events there were ties for the top three spots. And fans were kept on the edge of their seats as they watched some crafty roughstock try to outwit the cowboys.
There were results for 11 CCA rodeo events. In the saddle bronc event, Wyatt Thurston and Casey Bertram tied for first. Richard Houston, Timothy Costello and Kirk Thompson were in a three-way tie for third, followed by Mankota’s Rhett Fitzpatrick in sixth spot. In the bareback event, Colter Harden placed first, Brady Bertram placed second and Brett Williams placed third.
