WEYBURN – The first year for the Highway 39 Cup home-and-home series between the Weyburn Red Wings and the Estevan Bruins saw the new trophy awarded to the Bruins on Saturday night, after they won the best-of-three in convincing fashion.
The Bruins won 5-0 on home ice on Wednesday night, and 7-0 at Crescent Point Place in Weyburn, with the cities’ respective police chiefs on hand to present the trophy in the Bruins dressing room.
In addition, Weyburn police chief Jamie Blunden took off his Red Wings jersey and donned the Bruins jersey from Estevan police chief Richard Lowen, and then wore it at work at the Weyburn police station on Monday.
In Saturday’s game, the last one for 2021 at home, Jackson Fellner was in net for the Wings, and saved 41 of 48 shots, while Cam Hrdlicka had an easier night, stopping all 22 shots that came his way.
In the Wednesday night game, Fellner was between the pipes and stopped 42 of 47 shots on net, while Boston Bilous was in net for Estevan, and he saved all 21 shots against him.
Sandwiched between these two games, Weyburn hosted the Melville Millionaires to a 4-1 loss on Friday evening.
Weyburn’s only goal was scored by Ethan Whillans with nine seconds left in the second period, assisted by Nick Dobson and Luke Schaeffer.
Boston Gelowitz was in net for the Red Wings, and he saved 30 of 33 shots, with Melville’s fourth goal on an empty net late in the third. Jared Thompson was in net for Melville, stopping 27 of 28 shots.
The Red Wings are now off until the Tommy Huston Classic over New Year’s, when they will again face their Highway 39 rivals. They will play in Estevan on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m., and in Weyburn on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, at 7:30 p.m.
