CARLYLE - The Carlyle Cougars Senior Girls Volleyball team is back in action in 2021. It has been an exciting first two weeks for the girls, with lots of fun, lots of smiles and lots of excitement back in the gymnasium.
After a busy start to the year with tryouts and practices, the girls started off the tournament season with the annual Mega Volleyball Tournament in the communities of Arcola and Carlyle. Twelve teams participated in games for the first time in almost two years, and it was amazing in all facets. The gym was rocking and when it was all done, it was the Kipling Magyars defeating the Carnduff Tigers in the championship final.
It was great to see everyone back playing, all the excitement from players and parents and so much more. The Carlyle girls lost in the semifinals to Kipling in a very exciting match, losing 2-0 (28-26, 25-20) but were very happy with their third place performance for the first weekend of volleyball in almost 20 months.
A big thanks to all the fans, officials and Arcola School for cohosting once again.
After a couple more practices this past week, the girls travelled to Carnduff to participate in the Carnduff invitational senior girls tournament. After an average round robin pool winning against Moosomin, Wawota and Redvers and losing to Carnduff, Oxbow and Kipling, the girls barely advanced to the playoff round, and when the playoffs rolled around, the girls played their best volleyball of the year, with a three-set win against the first place Tigers from Carnduff and then a two-set sweep against the Oxbow Black Knights in the championship final.
Next action for the Cougars is next weekend in Kipling followed by a trip to Yorkton for the Raiders Sr. Girls tournament. The girls are hopeful that the year continues. Even with the COVID restrictions, it has been a great start to the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association volleyball season.
The Gordon F Kells senior golf team played in the Â鶹´«Ã½AV East District Senior Golf Tournament on Sept. 14.
The team members are Carter Morrison, Tyrell Dixon, Chase Robertson and Porter Barnett. The team played very well on the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course in Estevan.
Carter Morrison placed third overall, shooting a 77 for his round. He now qualifies for senior boys’ provincial golf near the end of September.
On Sept. 18, it was the junior golf team’s chance to compete. This year’s junior golf team included Dane Pedersen, Dawson Galbraith, Jaden Fischer, Nolan Riddell and Tiana Dellaleau. The team participated in the junior districts tournament in Redvers.
They played very well with Dellaleau winning the Grade 8/9 girls division. Congratulations to all our school golfers for a fun golf season.
