Three Assiniboia Rockets high school football players, Weston Mergel, Riley Moneo and Parker Auchstaetter, headed to the 2017 Six-Man Provincial Senior Bowl Games, which was held Saskatoon on May 19-22.
The Bowl Games featured the top 170 graduating high school players from the Northern and 麻豆传媒AVern parts of the province. It was a showcase for scouts, coaches, players and fans. The three Assiniboia Rockets players, pictured with their coach Brian Ruthven (at top), were selected to Team 麻豆传媒AV. They were also practicing at the Rockets鈥� spring football camp on May 17-18 in Assiniboia.
While the football season officially kicks off in late August, the team held a two-day training camp now for Grade 8 to 11 players to create interest in high school football. The Rockets had come off a fantastic year this past season going all the way to the league quarter finals and posting a 14-2 win record for the past two seasons.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a building year,鈥� said Ruthven, noting that the team will be losing its Grade 12 players who will be graduating in June. The team is looking to build on the new and existing talent and welcomes some new prospects from Grade 8.
鈥淲e have a good coaching staff,鈥� Coach Ruthven said of the coaches who are all returning to the team this year too. He noted that the coaches contributed a lot of time and effort to the team. The training camp ended with a team supper on May 18. For those who missed the camp, there鈥檚 still a chance to sign up for the team in the fall.
