The Estevan Extreme Bruins may have missed out on a provincial title, but they wrapped up their season on a high note by winning the female bantam A division at the annual March Ice tournament in Saskatoon on the weekend.
The Bruins went undefeated throughout the tournament and topped the Weyburn Wings 3-1 in the final to win the championship.
Weyburn struck first in the final on a first-period goal by Kenzie Klein, but the Bruins stormed back in the second period.
Mackenzie Ronyk tied the game on a goal less than a minute into the frame, and Hailey Dukart gave the Bruins the lead at 8:28.
The Bruins carried the 2-1 lead into the intermission.
In the third, Jenna Grube gave Estevan some insurance with 5:29 to play.
The Bruins had kicked off the tournament on Friday with a 4-2 win over the Diefenbaker Thunder, riding a three-goal first period to victory.
Ronyk opened the scoring four minutes in, and Hannah Battersby gave Estevan a two-goal edge midway through the period.
Kaci Jones got Diefenbaker on the board with a goal at the 13:32 mark.
The Bruins responded though, with Kailey McLellan scoring with 54 seconds remaining in the period.
After a scoreless second, the Thunder made it a one-goal game at the 6:48 mark of the third period on a goal by Skylar Stephenson.
But the Bruins held them off the rest of the way and Ronyk scored her second of the game with three minutes left to seal the win.
In their second game on Saturday, the Bruins hammered Weyburn 6-1.
Grube and Brooklyn Dukart scored in the first period to put the Bruins out in front.
Weyburn's Sarah Hoffart cut that lead in half at 2:20 of the second, but Haley Ronyk scored twice for the Bruins later in the period to give her team a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.
The Bruins scored two more goals in the third period, courtesy of Brooklyn Dukart and Mariah McKersie.
Estevan won their third and final round-robin game 10-3 over the WoodRiver Ice Cats.
Having won their pool, the Bruins then met Diefenbaker again in the semifinals on Sunday morning. Brooklyn Dukart scored a hat trick to lead Estevan to a 4-1 win.
The Bruins scored three times in the first period, including two goals from Dukart and one from Jessica Pele, to take a 3-1 lead after the first 20 minutes.
Andrea Sinclair had the lone goal for the Thunder.
After a scoreless second period, Dukart completed her hat trick at 6:21 of the third to put the game out of reach and send the Bruins to the final.
