A three-goal deficit proved too much for the Estevan Extreme Bruins to come back from in the provincial female bantam A final.
The Bruins lost 4-2 to the Swift Current Colts on Friday at Spectra Place in Game 2 of the final to lose the series by a combined total of 8-3.
It marked the second straight year that the Estevan provincial bantam A team has lost to Swift Current.
"We just couldn't get a bounce," said Extreme Bruins head coach Brooke Battersby. "We worked hard, we got a lead, got that first goal, and then we just couldn't carry on with it."
Haley Ronyk opened the scoring for the Bruins at 9:48 of the first period.
But the Colts responded in kind, scoring two goals in a span of 2:24 shortly after that marker to take control of the game.
Katie Hope had two of those goals for the Colts while Keely Chalk had the other.
Tori Kendall scored less than four minutes into the second period to extend the Colts' lead to three.
Jessica Pele scored for the Bruins at 4:32 of the third, but it was a case of too little, too late for Estevan.
"It came down to just some of the little things, doing the things we're supposed to do and getting the odd-man rush," said Battersby.
"The girls knew we were down going into the third and they came out and they battled right to the end, pushed them, and I'm proud of all of them."
Battersby said his team got lots of chances in the first two games, but only managing to score three goals combined was a factor in the loss.
The Bruins had lost the series opener 4-1 on March 17 in Swift Current.
"We didn't score enough. We had our chances. We just couldn't put them in, we couldn't finish them off. That's the way hockey is. Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don't."
Battersby said his team hadn't seen most of the Swift Current players all year.
"I think most of them actually played midget. They're all bantam-aged players, but I think a lot of them played up, so we never played them during the league.
"But that doesn't really matter. We played them hard, we played them good, we had a good effort from all the girls."
