ESTEVAN - The Estevan Steelhaus U18 AAA Bears had a highly productive weekend in home games against the Battlefords Stars.
Estevan defeated the Stars 7-4 on Saturday and then set a franchise record for goals in a game Sunday in a 9-3 drubbing.
Carter Onrait and Kole Keen scored in the first period to give Estevan a 2-0 lead on Saturday. Each team scored twice in the second, with Blaze Gutzke and Carter Skarbon tallying for Estevan.
Gutzke, Evhan Allan and Carter Tuplin tallied in the third for Estevan. Gutzke added two helpers, while Keen had three assists to give each player a four-point game.
Kaden Perron made 28 saves for Estevan.
Onrait opened the scoring for the second straight game on Sunday. Thomas Ries and Riley Craigen added to the lead, but then the Stars scored twice in 23 seconds to pull within one before the first period was finished.
Goals by Easton Lee, Tristan Grohs, Ries and Tuplin in the second put Estevan ahead by five.
Josh Heistad and Skarbon tallied in the third to round out the scoring.
Jye Zawatsky added three assists for the Bears.
Riley Deck made 29 saves to get the victory in net.
The previous franchise record for goals in a game by the Bears was seven, which happened several times since debut in 2020.
The Bears (10-22-6) have 26 points and will miss the playoffs for the second consecutive year. They will visit the Regina Pat Canadians on Feb. 14, and the Stars on Feb. 18 and 19.
