Estevan golfers impress in first round of provincial tournament at Woodlawn

Many golfers are competing at the tournament taking place at Woodlawn.

ESTEVAN - Defending Saskatchewan senior women’s amateur champion Kim Walker is off to a strong start at the 2022 edition of the tournament, being held at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course. 

The Regina Wascana Country Club golfer shot a 1-over par 73 on day one of the championship. She leads Regina’s Tamara Harasen by three shots.

Lorie Boyle of Moose Jaw's Hillcrest Golf Club rounds out the top three at 9-over par.

The 54-hole championship resumes at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

The top senior on the men’s side of the draw after round one is Delisle’s Colin Coben.

The three-time winner of the provincial senior championship was one of two players to shoot under par on opening day. Coben shot a 4-under par 68 to take a three-shot lead over Regina’s Richard Michell.

Two-time reigning champion Rick Hallberg is sitting in third place after an opening round 72. Hallberg is from Weyburn but plays out of Golf Kenosee. 

Others entered include Brian Hank of Woodlawn, who is tied for ninth with a 4-over-par 76; Davoid Lavoie and Pat Murphy of Woodlawn, who are tied for 12th with a 77, James Gordon of Woodlawn, tied for 22nd with a 79; Paul Grimes of Golf Kenosee, tied for 28th after an 80;  Michael Ross of Woodlawn, tied for 32nd after an 81; Terry Rohatyn of Woodlawn, tied for 40th with an 83; Jim Larter of Woodlawn, tied for 45th at 84; Jim Wilson of Woodlawn, tied for 52nd at 88; and Trevor Gessner of Woodlawn, 60th after a 92.

The Saskatchewan mid-masters (40 and over) is also being played this week in Estevan. Meadow Lake’s Chris Reid has the first round lead in the 54-hole tournament.

Reid is 4-under par after his round on Tuesday. He has a three-shot lead over Regina’s Ron Swan who shot 71 on day one.

Kris Carley of the Carnduff Golf Club is fourth after a 2-over-par 74. Among those also entered are Tony Heath and James Gordon of Woodlawn, who are tied for eighth after a 79, Warren Waldegger of Woodlawn who is tied for 11th with an 80, Michael Ross of Woodlawn, who is 13th after an 81; Dallas Kurtz of Woodlawn, who is 17th after an 88.

Tee times will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

The final round for all three tournaments will be Thursday.
