WEYBURN - The Estevan Bruins and the Weyburn Red Wings had their closest and most entertaining game of the season Saturday night in Weyburn.
Estevan won the first three meetings of the season between the Highway 39 rivals by a combined score of 19-4, but faced a resilient Weyburn team. The Red Wings had just 14 skaters and two goalies dressed, as the Wings have already started to trade their veteran players.
Eric Pearce opened the scoring 1:40 into the second period for Estevan, and Mark Rumsey doubled the advantage midway through the frame.
Former Bruin Nikolas Sombrowski scored late in the second to pull the Wings to within one, and new Weyburn Braden Birnie tied the game in the third on a Wings’ two-man advantage.
Rumsey scored the winner 7:21 into the third.
Cam Hrdlicka made 25 saves to get the win for Estevan, including some big saves in the final 12 minutes of the third when Weyburn pressed to tie the game. Dazza Mitchell had 27 saves for Weyburn.
The Bruins will venture to Flin Flon on Nov. 19 and 20 for games against the Bombers.
