After a hard-fought first half, the A.E. Peacock Tornadoes pulled away in the second en route to a 26-3 victory over the ECS Elecs Friday in the Elecs' home opener.
The loss drops Estevan to 1-2 in the Moose Jaw High School Football League, while Peacock improves to 2-1.
The Elecs scored their only points in the second quarter, courtesy of a forced safety and a punt single by Kyle Hovind. They trailed 10-3 at the half.
First-year Elecs quarterback Kolby Fleury looked to be rounding into form in the second quarter, making several completions, but was unable to drive his team into the end zone. Fleury threw three interceptions in the second half.
The Tornadoes got on the board with 6:34 left in the first quarter, running it in from two yards out on third and goal following two big stops by the Elecs.
In the second, Elecs tackle Cole MacCuish used a shoestring tackle from behind to haul down Peacock quarterback Zach Huschi on the run. That forced the Tornadoes to settle for a field goal, making the score 10-0.
The Estevan defence was particularly strong in the first half, with two sacks and a blocked punt by Isaac Elder.
The Tornadoes made it 17-3 late in the third quarter on a spectacular 70-yard run, followed by a short touchdown pass. They then added to their margin with a safety early in the fourth.
Two runs by Dustin MacCuish got the Elecs to the Peacock 14 with less than four minutes to play, but a holding penalty and subsequent turnover on downs squashed their last shot at an offensive score.
The Tornadoes would add a 39-yard rushing major with less than a minute to play.
