ECS soccer teams preparing for regionals

The Estevan Comprehensive School boys' and girls' soccer squads have provincials in their sights, and to get there they'll have to qualify through regionals in Weyburn next weekend.

The other teams competing are Weyburn and Swift Current and the ECS teams need to finish in the top two to advance.

The girls' squad, coached by Stacy Murphy, wrapped up its regular season in the Moose Jaw high school league on Thursday with a 6-1 loss to Weyburn.

League playoffs began with quarter-final action yesterday in Moose Jaw, although Murphy wasn't sure last week who the Elecs' opponents would be.

A win there would vault the Elecs to the semis tomorrow.

"It's been a learning year again because there are a lot of Grade 9s," said Murphy. "But the returning players have meshed really well together and they're playing a lot better this year."

The Elecs have three Grade 12 players.

Murphy said the goal is "for them to play as hard as they can and try as well as they can and work on their communication. If they communicate well, that's when they score the goals."

The boys' team, meanwhile, has played in one tournament at Sacred Heart in Yorkton, finishing third on the B side there the weekend of Sept. 30-Oct. 1.

The boys, coached by Matt Shuya, include four Grade 12 students.

The squad has a busy week ahead in getting ready for regionals, with four games. The Elecs were in Kipling yesterday, play in Weyburn today, host Weyburn tomorrow and host Kipling next Wednesday.

Shuya said "team play, especially as far as passing and ball control" is the main area his group needs to work on this week.

He added that the Elecs have a "strong defence" but that "the offence needs a little work."
