WEYBURN - In their third straight victory of the season, the Weyburn Comp Eagles football team claimed a 16-8 victory over the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles had a strong first half on both offense and defense coming out with a 9-0 lead. The Eagles scored again in the third quarter before the Cyclones were able to score their first touchdown, and the final score was a 16-8 win and sole possession of first place.
Danny Fortune, Grade 11 centre for the Eagles, said, “it felt great, it feels good to be number one in the league again. I haven’t felt that since bantam.”
“Our team is doing great, our defense is really good and our offense is doing great. We can always get better at some things, but all and all, we are doing really well.”
Fortune added he finds leadership from “Ben Manning, our quarterback, and Evan Barsness, our tackle, are both great leaders. They keep the energy up for the team during the games.”
Alex Junk, a 14-year-old offensive lineman, is playing his first year of high school football this year. “The Central team is known as the best in the league, so it felt great to beat them.”
He also feels encouraged by Manning, Barsness, Austin Knupp and Ben Michel. “All of those veteran players are great inspiration to all of us.”
Kaleb Charlton, 16-year-old defenseman, said, “We have a great team and are doing really good this year. Our defense has been really good, we shut down (Central) and kept them to only eight points.”
Next action for WCS football will see the Junior Varsity team take on Lumsden today, Oct. 6 at the WMF field at 6 p.m., and the Senior Eagles will travel to Moose Jaw on Saturday, Oct. 9 to take on the Vanier Vikings.
“We are working on perfecting all of our plays (to face Vanier), and get our defense ready to face them,” said Fortune.
“I think we will do very good, as long as we play our game the way we have been,” said Charlton.
