Draggers get sunshine for second race day

As numerous drag racers attempted to set the land speed record last week in the 63rd annual Bonneville SpeedWeek, the Estevan Drag Racing Association hosted what was, for now, its last event of the season on Sunday.

Conditions were ideal for the second race day of the year, with the sun shining and spectators able to drive to the facility at the Estevan Municipal Airport, unlike the first event in July.

"We had some technical difficulties with the sensors, but it ran pretty smooth from there on in," said EDRA president Jim Forrest.

A total of 67 drag racers entered on Sunday, down from 74 in the season opener.

"That seems to be in our average, around 60, so anything over that is a bonus. (But) we certainly would like to increase that," Forrest said.

He estimated the crowd at about 300, which was also down slightly.

"We always like to see more. Anybody who didn't get there missed a pretty good show."

Skip Zentner of Russell, Man., won the Quick 16 event, while the A Event went to Carlyle's Troy Turner.

The second running of the new street tire class was won by Hildor Peters of Bienfait, and Estevan's Dave Krahn was the top motorcycle driver.

Saskatoon's Rachel Walde earned victory in the junior dragster division.

Forrest said the street tire class was a highlight on Sunday and is gaining steam in the area.

"We're getting some hot little cars out from town. Those guys are having a blast and we're having fun with them there."

The association is considering a third race day on Oct. 2 to make up for the cancelled event on June 19. The matter will be discussed at a meeting tonight.

The concern is that the weather is more unpredictable in October and it gets dark earlier, leaving less time for cleanup after the races.
