Community says goodbye to the Assiniboia Civic Centre

In many ways, the historic gathering was spent reminiscing and reconnecting with old friends from the past as well as from the present.

ASSINIBOIA - Saying goodbye to an old friend is never easy.  Especially when you and that old friend have spent so much quality time together over the years.

An unbreakable and inexplicable bond is that which exists between us and our oldest and dearest friends - a bond that lasts a lifetime. You know full well whereof we speak. You’ve experienced it.

Many old friends who grew up and attended school here in Assiniboia, gathered together to say good-bye to an even older dear friend: the Assiniboia Civic Centre on April 2.

Built decades ago, the civic centre - which has faithfully and steadfastly stood to serve the needs of this great community - will soon be torn down once the new Sports Complex/ Arena is finally up and running.

Over the years of time, hockey, figure skating, public skating, trade shows, ‘shinny’, and summer recreation programs have all found a warm (so to speak) and friendly home in this iconic community landmark.

In many ways, the historic afternoon and gathering was happily spent reminiscing and reconnecting with old friends from the past as well as from the present.

Some even came from far and away, even though they now live and work elsewhere outside the province. Those gracious and kindly souls who took time to show up and say farewell dear friend, were not just saying goodbye, but in essence, were showing their deep love and respect for the entire community they lived and grew up in.

Remember the old saying: “It takes a village to raise a child”?  Well, it’s true. Here in Assiniboia the statement is very true, beyond the shadow of a doubt!

After all was finally said and done and the lights in the rink went out, the event was a most touching display of love and affection for an old and respected friend - the Assiniboia Civic Centre. Thank you for your service. Goodbye Old Friend: we honour you with our smiles, giggles, laughter, and an occasional tear.
