Saturday was a good news, bad news kind of day for Estevan Minor Football.
The organization announced a $30,000 donation from Penta Completions to become EMF's lead sponsor for the next five years.
On the other hand, its three teams went scoreless in their home openers at Estevan Comprehensive School.
Wolverines 66, Chargers 0
After putting a touchdown on the board in their season opener, the peewee Chargers were shut out on Saturday.
Probably the biggest positive for the Chargers was their tackling, with their defence coming up with several big hits.
"I think our defence played pretty well. We made some good plays," said head coach Steve McLellan.
"Offensively, we were able to move the ball a little bit and definitely got the passing game going a little bit. We started to have some success there. We've got some work to do, but I think we'll get there."
Regina led 36-0 at halftime.
"It was very difficult to move the ball against that team. I don't know if that's a function of who we were playing or what we were doing. Our blocking could have been better," McLellan added.
The Chargers visit the Grenfell Argos on Saturday.
Alouettes 41, Miners 0
In the first game of the day, the Miners improved on their Week 1 showing but failed to get into the end zone.
"The first half was kind of iffy. I don't know why. We had a little chat at halftime and in the second half they picked it up quite a bit," said head coach Garth Dietz.
Dietz said his players got some confidence after holding the Alouettes, a team comprised mostly of veterans, to several two-and-outs.
"They started to play better defensively on the line. We changed a couple of things and that seemed to make it a lot easier for them."
A focal point for the defence will be trying to stop the sweep.
Offensively, Dietz said the Miners will focus on passing to the sidelines rather than trying to go deep over the middle.
The Miners will pay a visit to the Regina Kats on Saturday.
