The Estevan Chargers couldn't have asked for a better start on Sunday, but they couldn't capitalize on that momentum in a 68-8 loss to the Regina Huskies at Estevan Comprehensive School.
On the peewees' first play of the game, quarterback Jordan Howie pitched the ball to Levi Pick, who ran down the sideline for a touchdown.
"I was really happy to see our wide receivers made some blocks there. Our O-line was good on that too," said Chargers head coach Steve McLellan.
"It was a real good start to our game. They managed to adjust after that, but we did come out strong."
Alas, the Huskies would pile up a 41-8 lead at halftime before slowing down a bit in the second half.
"I think we were playing a really good team. A lot of respect has to go to them, too," McLellan said.
"They're a very physical team and we weren't quite able to match it at the beginning. By the end it was more competitive," he added.
One of the third-quarter touchdowns for Regina symbolized the kind of day it was for the Chargers (1-4).
A pass from Howie deflected off the hands of a Chargers' receiver and into the arms of a Huskies' cornerback, who ran it down to the one-yard line to set up a short pass into the end zone.
There were some highlights for the Chargers, though, including an interception by Colein Poole in the third quarter and a blocked punt by Pick in the final minute of play.
Estevan also had some big plays called back on penalties, including a 47-yard run by Howie and a 28-yard reception by Pick.
The Chargers will host the Regina Patriots on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
