The Estevan Chargers became the first minor football squad in Estevan to win a game this season with a 50-42 victory over the Grenfell Argos on Saturday.
The peewee team, coming off a 66-0 defeat against the Regina Wolverines the previous week, rebounded from a poor first quarter to win on the road.
"That was a fun game," said head coach Steve McLellan.
Running back Levi Pick led the attack with three touchdowns on the ground. Karter Tuchscherer caught two touchdown passes and Jordan Howie added two running majors.
"He's an amazing runner," assistant coach Bill Paulson said of Pick.
The Argos jumped out to a 24-6 lead after the first quarter, but the Chargers didn't give up.
"We kind of changed the guys around on defence a bit," said Paulson.
That led to a dominant second quarter for Estevan and a 34-34 tie at the half.
"I thought that our offence could really move the ball. Our passing game was off the charts. We must have passed for 300 yards. It was crazy," said McLellan.
"When you score 50 points, you can't really criticize anything on the offensive side of the ball."
The game went down to the wire, with the Chargers breaking a 42-42 tie with a touchdown and two-point conversion in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
Grenfell turned the ball over on downs on their 20-yard line, allowing the Chargers to punch it in for the winning score. Paulson said the Argos didn't punt the ball all game.
"They messed up right at the end. They should have punted, but they didn't so we ended up pushing it through."
The Chargers' next game is against the Regina Unicorns on Saturday at Estevan Comprehensive School. Game time is 12:30 p.m.
