The Carlyle Cougars split the two games they played on the weekend in the Big Six Hockey League.
Carlyle lost to the Moosomin Rangers 6-5 on Friday night, but recovered to defeat the Midale Mustangs 9-2 on Saturday.
Moosomin had leads of 3-2 after the first and 6-4 through two periods. Dakota Rose had two goals for Carlyle, and Ben Johnstone, Brent McLean and Rhett Palmer also scored.
Monty Driver and Devin McGonigal had two goals each for Moosomin. Devon Jamieson and Bud Holloway were the other Moosomin goal scorers.
Ryan Kulyk was in goal for Carlyle, while Levi Horn was the Moosomin goaltender.
Palmer (two goals and three assists), Johnstone (a goal and four assists) and Billy Greenwood (two goals and two assists) paced the Cougars’ attack against Midale. Chase Robertson, Koby Morrison, Mitch Himmelspach and Jon Gaudet were the Cougars’ other goal scorers.
Seven Lindenbach and Devon Johnson were the Midale goal scorers.
Kulyk was in goal for Carlyle, while Talen King was the starting goalie for Midale.
Other games on Friday saw the Carnduff Red Devils beat Midale 8-1 and the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings blank the Wawota Flyers 8-0. On Saturday, Carnduff beat Yellow Grass 3-1.
Ty Stovin led Carnduff’s attack against Midale with three goals and an assist, and Trevor Geiger scored twice. Tanner Reynolds, Mark Moriarty and Devin Carriere also scored.
Brady Bjorndal was Midale’s lone scorer.
Cody Dumaine was in goal for Carnduff, and King was Midale’s goalie.
Yellow Grass raced out to a quick 4-0 lead against Wawota. Zach Douglas scored three times in the opening 12 minutes of the game and added two assists in the win. Luke Niemgeers had two goals for the Wheat Kings, and Connor Lafoy Rhett Frey and Tucker Neuberger also scored.
Nate Ferris earned the shutout in goal.
In the game between Yellow Grass and Carnduff, Douglas opened the scoring in the second period for Yellow Grass, but Nico Anderson tallied twice for the Red Devils before the middle frame was finished. Then Stovin scored in the third for some breathing room.
Cody Dumaine was the Carnduff goalie, while Ferris was in goal for Yellow Grass.
A game between Moosomin and Bienfait, slated for Saturday, was postponed.
Moosomin opened play in provincials on Sunday, losing 3-2 in overtime to Wynyard in Game 1 of their Senior C south quarter-final. Game 2 will be Jan. 29 in Moosomin.
The next scheduled game in the Big Six is Jan. 25 when Carlyle is to visit Carnduff.
Three games are slated for Jan. 28: Wawota at Midale, the Redvers Rockets at Oxbow, and Bienfait at Moosomin. Yellow Grass will visit Oxbow on Jan. 29, and Wawota is at Carnduff on Jan. 30.
