The opening of the 2010 fishing season is sure to be a memorable one for a pair of Bienfait residents.
The father and son duo of Clinton and Chandler Harkins captured first place at the annual Estevan Wildlife Federation Walleye Classic which was held Saturday at the Boundary Dam Reservoir.
The Harkins' six fish weighed in at 13.54 pounds which was good enough to edge out the second place team of Barry Bod and Wayne Blomberg who had a combined weight of 13.54 pounds.
Richard Panchuk and Joel Campbell placed third with a weight of 12.54 pounds. Lance Marcotte and Karen Soke were fourth with a weight of 12.44 pounds while the combo of Wayne Thul and Glen Buettner were fifth with a combined weight of 11.88 pounds.
The prize for the biggest fish went to Estevan's Jamie Dyer who landed a walleye that came in at just over four pounds.
A total of 32 teams took part in this year's classic which is down from their average of 50 over the past few years. EWF president Mike Halirewich said the uncertainty over the weather was a factor in the drop in entries although he noted they were very happy with the weather on the day of the event.
Despite having fewer entries, Halirewich said the EWF was pleased with how this year's competition went.
"It went smooth," said Halirewich. "Everything went good today, there was perfect weather."
